How to Know if You Are a Sleepless Elite
They've been called the "sleepless aristocracy". Barack Obama, Julia Gillard and Elon Musk would go six hours a night. Richard Branson functions on v. Four hours were sufficient for Margaret Thatcher and Marissa Mayer. And Donald Trump plain has a beggarly three.
They're the stories that brand y'all ponder your ain slumber habits: 'If they can govern a state or run a multibillion-dollar concern on under seven hours, why do I feel like I've been hit past a train?'
And then there are the people in your ain life – perhaps a friend, a colleague, a boss – who proudly proclaim to get five hours a night and still manage to fly upward the career ladder. Meanwhile the residuum of united states of america mere earthlings enter a panic every Sunday evening almost not getting the recommended seven to nine hours a nighttime.
People who slumber six hours or less a night are referred to by experts as "curt sleepers". But do some people really need less sleep than others to function well?
The brusk answer is yes, according to Sleep Wellness Foundation chair Dorothy Bruck, just true natural curt sleepers are a rare breed, estimated to brand up merely about i per cent of the population. That'south because most people who claim to be short sleepers are in fact sleep deprived.
The Sleep Health Foundation's 2016 survey establish 12 per cent of Australian adults slept less than 5½ hours before work days. Of those, three-quarters admitted to having two or more sleeping difficulties or daytime symptoms.

That leaves a quarter who didn't complain of negative impacts due to brusk sleep. But Professor Bruck says it's highly probable the bulk of these are not doing as well equally they think they are.

Telltale signs that someone isn't getting enough sleep include guzzling down caffeine or playing catch-up on weekends and holidays. It means they manage get the same amount of deep, restorative sleep in six hours or less every bit the rest of us would in eight hours.
