Sanctum, a holy or sacred place- what could be more sacred than possessing the power of your own true thoughts? Sanctum. Information technology is both lock and key.Actual rating: 1.five stars. I admittedly despise giving such a low rating and a harsh review for a book I received every bit an ARC. All the same, information technology is in exchange for my honest opinion. Right? So here it goes:
Oh, the potential that this serial had- and the consummate disappointment that it was...
Sanctum continues Daniel Crawford and his 2 friend's journeying to find why they have had bad dreams and hallucinations since leaving the higher over the summer. Dan'due south old roommate is at present in a mental hospital, and upon request to see him, gives Dan a code to follow that sends him on a wild goose hunt to find his answers.
I have a lot of questions for the author on why she did what she did in this book. My biggest one is "WHY was so much wasted on rushing??" We had creepy houses being found, broken into, and searched...and we get two pages for each firm?! What a totally missed opportunity. There was niggling-to-no description of these creepy places. They went in, smelled mold, found what they were looking for. That was it. I want some item! I want to be scared of these houses. I want descriptions, creepy old findings, memories left backside from the owners from long ago. Why? Why? Why?
That brings me to the biggest "miss" in this book. It was rushed. Merely similar the beginning book, it went from one finding to some other with no information, characterization, history, etc. to the story. Nosotros knew nothing about VERY key players in this story. It was just like they met Daniel and we were expected to know who they were, or why they were the style they were. Another hugely missed opportunity.
There was information that wasn't kept straight in the volume. For example: Dan lied to his parents near where he was going for the weekend. He said he was going to Jordan's house. He instead went dorsum to the college for prospect weekend. He feels bad about lying. Guilty. And then, just as a random blurb- he gets a text from his mom saying "Hi honey, how is campus? Behaving yourself?" Not like he got caught in his lie, just every bit if that was the story all forth. I am hoping these many mistakes are merely because I have an ARC, and these alien parts of the story will be fixed before print.
Also, just as with Asylum, these characters could not pass for 18. fourteen at near. They were not believable characters. As well forth to those lines: why were they never scared? Yous are telling me these "kids" just witness a live lobotomy, walk away, get hide in a basement, i decides to take a nap, and the other actually responds to someone saying "okeydokey"? No 1 was ever terrified. No 1 ever cried.
What the heck happened with Dan and Abby'southward human relationship?? It is mentioned often in the showtime- so forgotten about. Mentioned 1 paragraph later on...then only *poof* - never mentioned over again. When they parted at the cease "I'll be in bear on." Really? So does that mean the human relationship is over?
Information technology was entirely aggravating that everything they were looking for, and all the answers sought, just would "coincidently" fall into their hands. For instance: they start receiving pictures of a creepy carnival. They accept no idea why. Then await!!! The very aforementioned creepy carnival that they are looking for falls right into their lap! Information technology just so happens to exist at the school the same weekend they are there. Perfect. Amazing. Or when they go from house to house according to the lawmaking, and they only so happen to notice what they are looking for in the showtime xxx seconds, fifty-fifty when they had no inkling what they were looking for! Astonishing! They notice a house full of sometime mail numberless. I hateful Total. As they are being chased away, Abby happens to grab simply iii letters from a stack to take with her. What a coincidence! One of the three letters (out of 800,238) but then happens to have the answers they are looking for! A piffling more creativity and waiting in this section would accept been peachy. Similar I said earlier, this book was very rushed. It totally ruined the whole feel of the book.
And then why the 1.v stars? I gave the volume an extra 1/2 star simply because I really connected reading to discover out what happened. I actually was curious. I didn't desire to stop because I wanted answers. Even so, I couldn't await for the book to terminate.
Great (no, AMAZING!) thought for these books. Corking covers. The books but were not that great. Hoping to see something new and improved in the future from this author. The creativity is present, but the aspects of a keen volume are simply not there.
*I received this advanced reader copy from HarperCollins in exchange for an honest review.

Was this supposed to exist a horror novel? Honestly, I didn't feel that way, it never gave me the creeps. I was so disappointed and I hoped that this series would get better. When I showtime saw this series, I idea that it would give me more scares. I thought it would be creepier than the Mara Dyer trilogy. But unfortunately, I was never scared. There were so many negative reviews but I wanted to read information technology anyway. One of the reasons I didn't savor this novel was the writing style. For some reason, I wasn't really comfy with it. All the dialogues and connections betwixt the characters were so fake. The parts that were supposed to be funny, didn't make me laugh. The parts that were supposed to exist scary, didn't scare me. I feel that the writing style didn't fit for this volume.
Another reason is the plot, information technology was very week. I wasn't interested in the story because of how boring the plot became. The volume was slow paced, and I just didn't enjoy it. I even tried reading at dark, with my night lamp, but this novel wasn't scary. One of my favorite Booktubers explained how they didn't bask the book. I don't know why I read it, even later on all the negative reviews.
The first book was also disappointing, but I was hoping that this book series would get better. But information technology never did, it just got worse. I didn't hate the characters, but I didn't honey them either. I like it when I can relate to the characters, but I didn't. I felt that the primary character, Dan, was selfish. He always got what he wanted and he gets jealous easily. The romance wasn't needed in this novel either.
I actually wish I liked this book, but I didn't. Although the summary sounds epic, it isn't that interesting. But I approximate this book isn't meant for me. Others may enjoy this volume, but I definitely did not. This book just wasn't my cup of tea. I just kept reading because I hoped that information technology would become better, but it never did. I am lucky that I didn't go into some other reading slump...

Ohhh I'm so happy to say that this sequel didn't have the "sequel curse" on information technology. It was merely as good as the first.Permit's go dorsum to the first book actually quick....Asylum is where we showtime meet Dan Crawford, Abby and Jordan. 3 unlikely teens to meet and become fast friends. Dan a History buff, especially interested in psychiatry. Abby the creative person and Jordan the math genius. They all come across in New Hampshire over the summer for a higher prep summer form. They quickly notice out bad things happen at this one-time asylum. People start getting hurt. They observe weird stuff in the old warden's office and basement. They as well detect out that illegal experimentation has been going on in the bowels of the asylum. Horrible experiments.
At present lets fast-forrard months later. Dan and friends are having daily nightmares of there stay at the asylum. They are hearing things, feeling things that aren't real. One twenty-four hour period Dan gets a letter from his old roomie's mom. Dan goes to meet Felix at the hospital and Felix gives him information leading to a "treasure hunt". Dan lets his friends know and off they go on a secret mission back to where it all began. They call up if they follow the clues Felix have left them so mayhap they'll exist able to sleep at night. Maybe the nightmares will go away. What they detect out is even more mysterious.
I have to say...I was somewhat disappointed in the starting time 50 or then pages. I idea it was moving too slowly. When does the mystery happen? But once the snowball started it didn't cease. The mystery was super creepy, totally awesome and I tin't believe for one time I actually kind of figured out the ending. Kind of. Speaking of endings...this is non a duology. There will be more books in this series. A 3rd book should be coming out next year 2015 forth with some other novella. So excited I bought these books :D
P.S. The ending, non a cliff hanger per say, merely it definitely keeps you lot thinking about the future and the possibilities :D
Happy Reading!!

So, I think the flipped table pretty much sums upwardly my feelings, but I figure I out to give an explanation.
Outset off let me say that I wasn't in love with the commencement book, but I was interested enough, and curious plenty, to proceed. The kickoff volume did have some tense bits, and quite a few unanswered questions which I was hoping would exist addressed in the follow-up.
Well, some of them were answered, but I found myself wishing I could go back and leave them open up instead, 'cause I sort of hated the answers - as you might be able to tell from the whole table flipping matter.
In cursory, this book was a hot mess. I felt like it was trying to put in as many "scary" things equally possible, whether or non it fabricated whatsoever sense to do and then.
The creepy funfair attribute, for instance, was non about as part of the story equally the blurb might pb you lot to believe, and I'chiliad not convinced information technology was necessary at all. The only reason it'southward in that location is to serve as an introduction of (view spoiler)[the immature warden to hypnosis (hide spoiler)], merely there were other ways that could've happened.
And yet, despite it playing so small-scale a role, we encounter several funfair photos throughout the book, from diverse sources, and it seemed generally an excuse for Roux to include the photos.
(Which, speaking of, the photos in general felt more out of place in this book. In the first book the photos served the story pretty well, but in this one I got the distinct feeling Roux had found photos beginning, and then tried to write them into the story in often convoluted and nonsensical ways.)
In add-on to the carnival, at that place'southward a undercover society with creepy masks and rituals, and we're meant to be left unsure of who to trust, just it's pretty freaking obvious from page 1 who's who.
(Ok, that might non be entirely off-white. Maybe page 10.)
And, lastly, there's the whole mind-control/brainwashing/CIA affair going on (which, in fairness, is connected to the secret club matter, but, again, seemed an entirely irrelevant side betoken).
The characters were meh in this installment, losing what little life and personality they had from the first book, and, as I said, the new characters were painfully predictable. The "romance" between Dan and Abby seemed fifty-fifty more than forced and pointless. (Of class, part of this is that they don't seem to actually accept anything in mutual, and I'grand not certain, aside from Dan's sorta insta-love in the first book 'cause Abby's hot, what is drawing them together at all. I mean, yeah, there'south the surviving crazy shit together thing, but this does non seem for real relationship make.)
The pacing was off, and while there were a few tense moments (thus the half star), most of it was pretty boring and plodding. I know several reviews who agree with some of my points yet loved the catastrophe, simply I wasn't impressed with that, either.
Merely, of form, past so I was more focused on how stupid everything was, and how disappointed I was that a seeming ghost story had get something more psychologically oriented - and in such a stupid way, to boot.
And, unfortunately, I can't actually get into it without getting into spoilers, so...

And so, nosotros find out that the Warden wasn't obsessed with curing his patients, even via unconventional ways, but that the "existent story" is that he wanted to control them via a combination of drug therapy, hypnosis(!), and, if that fails, surgery (i.e. lobotomies).
(view spoiler)[Yes, he wanted to command the perfect encephalon-washed soldiers - and, in fact, managed to hypnotize Reyes, the villain of these books, who, in plough, seemed to have most of the boondocks nether her sway.
Yes. The entirety of the town that we encounter are all under her sway - doing things, up to and including killing people, including their own people - and confronting their volition.
Because hypnosis.
Because that's how hypnosis works, of course.
But, and then again, there is that magical amulet that the Warden got from the funfair hypnotist - thus the tenuous carnival aspect.
And Reyes lures Dan and Co back to boondocks, and puts on a Carnival, to try and jog his "memories"* considering she thinks he'll figure out the trick to breaking the hypnosis that she couldn't figure out.
Because of his connectedness to the Warden.
Because, apparently, Dan can be hypnotized to take the memories of some other fucking person, because they're blood related.
Jordan and Abby and Felix and Dan were all hypnotized in the first book, which explains some of their odd beliefs (and, theoretically, as well why this beliefs is never called out and just completely dropped as a plot point, equally well).
And, apparently, there's a password - one single word, when said out loud, breaks the hypnosis... which, while not a completely mutual word, is still, somehow, a word that no one in this town had ever heard said out loud in all this time.
(By the way, I'g presuming the "said out loud" part, because that would explicate why reading it didn't break the hypnosis on Dan or Abby, though information technology'southward never explicitly stated.)
Also, Reyes is an idiot.
For one, she wants to know this word to break the hypnosis on her - simply doesn't consider that other people are in the room whom she has hypnotized and once this word is uttered their hypnosis will besides interruption, which could put her in a globe of danger, since these people are not going to exist too pleased with her.
Also, she somehow managed to hypnotize Dan into having someone else's memories, and forcing him to concur a knife to his own throat and even suspension skin (iirc), merely she doesn't only hypnotize him to a) not work confronting her and b) just answer her fucking questions?
I mean, she does make it and so that he tin can't injure her - so why not just take information technology the actress step and make information technology so he doesn't constantly fight against her? That does seem to b inside her repertoire.
Of form, Dan doesn't know the secret word and couldn't give information technology, anyway, but it still makes no sense for her to leave him with the free volition to fight her mentally, if not physically. (You could fence that hypnosis can only do and then much, and ordinarily I'd agree with you - but, then again, the ENTIRE FUCKING TOWN!) (hide spoiler)]
*ahem*
So, yeah, what started off as a potentially decent ghost story, though without the greatest of writing, turned into consummate and utter drivel.
Considering (view spoiler)[hypnosis (hide spoiler)].

This is easily the most angry I've been at a book this year, which I believe wins this book the dubious laurels of being my Worst Volume of the Year.

I read this book correct after I read the showtime one and enjoyed the read. I've read a lot of developed horror, and regularly watch horror films, and then I feel that I'm non really the correct person to say if this is scary or non. I do not scare easy and I didn't notice this to be even creepy, past my standards. I call back information technology does accept some parts in information technology though that were thrilling. Sanctumwas pretty well-paced, information technology did drag in a coupe of spots simply nothing too bad. I loved seeing the characters all back and some new cool ones added. The ending is definitely the highlight of this one for me. I liked that Roux planted some good scarlet herrings for u.s., and I didn't completely figure out the ending.
My biggest complaint about this book is actually the photos and carnival story line (probably the first fourth dimension I've ever said that and I hope it's the final). The funfair was talked virtually for quite a bit in the beginning and ended upward not having much to exercise with the story at all. Since the carnival story didn't come into play that much, the photos were kind of useless. To be honest, I almost felt like they were thrown in in that location considering funfair themes are adequately popular. The photos were cool, merely one-half the time I didn't really see what they had to do with the story, huge disconnect there for me. I would have given the volume a higher rating if non for that.
First installment of this serial, I gave four stars. This one I gave 3 - I hope I don't become any lower by the side by side installment. I will finish up the trilogy. It'due south worth information technology and so far for me.

There's a mix of everything, but is all well detailed and easy to sympathise, the plot is not complicated and the mystery is easy to follow.
This is another instance of book that is pretty hard to put down thanks to the short chapters where you desire to read more and more to discover what the heck is happening and how the story evolves.

I usually don't like when authors repeat EVERYTHING that happened in the previous story, only I wouldn't take minded a flake more hints. I couldn't even recollect what Dan looked like and I wasn't reminded either. At least I knew what Abby and Jordan looked like.
A plus, were the pictures. Quite a few of them gave me the creeps.
Thankfully, toward the end information technology did get more interesting and intense, but I do wish there would have been more than fourth dimension spent in the creepy houses!!

Information technology was another fast-paced adventure, with more than ghosts/hallucinations and an unnerving secret society that makes it's debut. I didn't really find myself emotionally invested in whatsoever of the characters, even Dan and co. from the first book, so in that location wasn't a real bulldoze to keep reading and detect out what happened next, only information technology was still entertaining enough to keep me reading.

Not as creepy every bit the first book (which wasn't all that creepy itself). It was another fast-paced adventure, with more than ghosts/hallucinations and an unnerving secret society that makes it's debut. Not a favourite I'd re-read over and over once again, but information technology might be worth a re-read a few years from now, if I need something quick and fun.

So as non to spoil anything, I like how they wrapped up the whole possession affair from the first book. I know it'southward supposed to exist a creepy ghost story but I didn't really like the whole possession thing.
I loved how eerie this book was! It was the perfect read for Halloween dark. A group of kids really scared the crap out of me because I was reading a creepy part and all suddenly they were shouting play tricks-or-treat through the door!
All in all This book was so out there. But it was and then good.

Interesting second installment of the Asylum serial. It did a bully job of intermingling creepy descriptions and spooky old circus photos. The philharmonic made for an entertaining story.

It was a great addition to the serial. Every bit with the first volume, it was a quick and easy read. The pictures were amazing, but it notwithstanding didn't really have that scare factor. Although it was more than and then with this ane than with Asylum. The twists and turns in the mystery part of the story was not bad every bit well and I really didn't run into it coming. Some of the story was in my opinion a fleck far fetched and even the things the characters guess seem to be reaching. Still information technology was fun and entertaining to read. I would love to see some better relationship developement between the characters merely even that but needs a fleck of tweeking.

I read Asylum last year and I rated it a 5 stars because of unexpected twists and turns. Most importantly, I felt creepy when I read that book. But at present, I'grand disappointed by the sequel. The story of Sanctum continues later Dan Crawford, Abby and Hashemite kingdom of jordan went back dwelling after attention the New Hampshire College Prep, a summer programme. They thought they're able to move on after what happened at the Brookline aviary. Everything changes when they receive creepy photos and a inkling to assist them solve the puzzle on what happened to them.
I would have to say that I'thou so disappointed on the story evolution. I wished it could be more paranormal or creepier but it does not. When I finished reading Asylum last year, I didn't cartel to step out from my room to go to the washroom because the corridor was dark. But when I read this volume, I don't feel scary at all.
Autonomously from not being scary, the development of the plot seems illogical to me. Not only that, virtually of the time it is wasted with some pointless dialogues and not plenty clarification on parts where it should be delivering the horror feelings to the readers. And because of that, I was kind of bored when reading information technology. The reason I continued reading just considering I wanted to know the end.
The last few capacity are the just chapters that I enjoyed reading because of the stride. The ending of the story did makes me wanted to read the 3rd book, simply I might think twice at present before purchasing information technology when information technology'southward published.

This won't be a terribly long review, just a short one to express my feelings. I only don't want to spoil all the stuff that happens in her
I finally decided to read this book, I know that in my review for book ane I said that I didn't experience the need for another volume, and that I probably wouldn't read it. Simply after a sudden urge for stories about asylums and chilling stuff, I decided to choice this one upward and read it. And boy, I am glad I did. This book was even better than the first one in this series. This won't be a terribly long review, merely a short one to limited my feelings. I just don't desire to spoil all the stuff that happens in here, and a lot of stuff happens and I feel like information technology would ruin the book should I talk about them in details.
The volume starts off just a bit after the horrible summertime they had at Brookline, the 3 friends are a bit more distanced and it isn't until a certain event happens that they go closer over again, determined to go back to that higher and to Brookline to notice out the truth and shut this horrendous thing once and for all.
I tin can somehow understand why they went, I might take done the same. Hoping to bury the past, hoping to finally be done with something, hoping to finally be able to rest without nightmares, or voices, or creepy stuff happening. Though, I might likewise just have said forget it and but stayed at abode, hoping that it will just all pass.
The story is packed full of twists, turns and creepy events, at times I was truly creeped out. Most of the book however didn't accept place in Brookline, but let me tell you that the campus (with the circus/carnival) or the creepy town is more than enough to requite someone goosebumps. At that place are a lot of events happening, creepy things, and things quickly escalate until it is full-diddled wtf and nope, nope and nope. I dearest all the stuff we notice out, the story just got improve and better and more and more than interesting.
We detect out some more nigh the Scarlets (the group that is also mentioned in the novella), and we meet up with the most horrendous dude always again, Cal, ah Cal, how I haven't missed you. Too bad you are still around. :\ I had kind of hoped that mister drinkable-tude would have been thrown into a rehab for once. Or maybe he had washed something bad and thrown into jail. Ah, one can hope. :\
I do have to add together one spoiler, just I will add that under the spoiler tags, I just need to become this i out of my system. (view spoiler)[ Of course Cal gets to exist redeemed as a guy who simply had this and that happen to him and cheers to something magical he suddenly turns out to be a expert guy. HAHHAHAHHAHAAH *rolls of chair**sits back on chair**wipes away tears*Sad, I merely couldn't believe that. Instead of being happy, I was simply shaking my head at the oh so easy convenience of it all. (hide spoiler)]
I didn't like Dan that much, his mental attitude really needs adjusting. I got a chip tired of his whiny rant well-nigh his friends (though he wouldn't call them that) at home. He but preferred his precious Abby and his lovely Jordan. *rolls eyes* Guy, you really demand to readjust your attitude. Those 2 friends of yours from your school are great and fun people, and certain they might non go your humour, but does that make them whatsoever less of a friend? They try to engage you in stuff, endeavour to exist there for you, and you just dismiss them.
At that place are also various photographs added to the book, which were fun, though at times they felt more than like a distractions instead of something good. At times we would have like 5 illustrations in a row, then nix for a long time, then another one again, then zip and so a batch again. Besides I wasn't and then much creeped out by them, something that the first book did do.
All in all, this was a pretty proficient book, and I can't look for the third one, I am kind of curious what will happen in in that location, there are still several unanswered things, but again, like with the beginning book, it felt pretty conclusive and finished.
Would I recommend this book? Aye, yes I would!
